THE GARAGE

A letter from the editor

Show a car enthusiast an airplane, and their eyes usually light up. Ask a pilot what they enjoy outside of flying; often, the answer is cars. There's an inescapable gravity between the two; maybe it's something about knowing how things work, and then seeing and feeling those things work out in the real world, employed in their niche task, pushing the limits of physics and occasionally pitted against other versions of the same ideal. Either on the ground or in the air, these machines bring us joy, make our jobs easier, or exist in the background taking us to places that make the rent or bring us joy, but in any facet, they leave an unavoidable and undeniable imprint on our lives.

TachWork Media was established by two aviation photojournalists in the interest of savoring, spotlighting, and documenting the metal of movement on the ground, and the blood, sweat, and tears that goes into keeping the gears turning. James Woodard (Director) and I (Nicholas Pascarella) began working together in the aviation industry in 2017 and quickly became close friends; as time passed, our creative photography nets expanded as we started exploring different subject matter independent of one another, yet always inspired and excited about the work of the other. Outside of aviation, we started to orbit around vehicles.

James Woodard is a dynamic shooter (who may or may not be a little biased towards American Muscle), but he is also steeped in the Earth world; his day job is with a contractor, and many of his images are of heavy machines pushing dirt, or the gruff faces of the skilled operators that pull the levers in the early morning light. Those machines may not turn hot laps, but their purpose-built nature, their power, and the precision of their crews is fascinating to me. I've been shooting and writing for a long time now, but I also grew up driving hard and tweaking cars (namely a 1996 Integra GS-R...I may or may not have a bias towards JDM products), but I sold my Mazdaspeed3 in 2010 to finance a move to NYC. I stayed away from the car scene for a decade because it was too painful to peer in from the outside, riding the subway and bus around, unable to shift my own gears.

I did not own a car again until 2021 when I acquired a BRZ, my very first RWD platform, and my automotive passion was explosively rekindled. As James and I met more drivers and attended more races, events and museums, it became apparent that this was more than just taking a few photos of cool cars between airshows. We wanted to hear about their adventures. We wanted to know how they made their owners and drivers feel. We wanted to make art out of that one pesky gasket that refuses to stop leaking oil. Now, we have somewhere to do just that.

Our paths converge once more with TachWork Media; the banner under which we will strive to tell the stories of the wheels that help us go. Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoy what's to come.

Respectfully and sincerely,
Nicholas Pascarella
